But then I started going through stresses and my weightloss started stalling and then experienced disaster and tragedy and it was too hard trying to eat healthy while trying to be fit in with family through those times so I stopped, to the point where I didn't want to do anything, I even stopped cooking and over 2 years I gained 53kg.

In December I restarted cooking but didn't quite make it back to whole foods or keto, and then last August I was diagnosed with severe sleep apnoea, even lifting my feet was difficult.

In September I was diagnosed with fatty liver and my GP told me to go back to diet doctor and I finally made the switch.

Since October I've lost 30 kg, I stick to strict keto but feel balanced. I can talk to people about keto til the cows come home without making a difference.

People look at me and congratulate me but say it's too hard and not for them even though for me it feels easy.

Documentaries like Magic Pill explains and shows results that my words cannot convey. So while for me, it mostly reinforced what I already knew, I'm excited that I can tell others about it.

A work colleague has already told me it's a game changer after watching it, whether she now acts on it is up to her. Would it be possible to get Magic Pill here?

Because it isn't available in European Netflix. I have lost 33 kg 73 lb , in a few months. I have dispensed with three medications, and my blood pressure, kidney function and liver function are all normal.

Last month I went back to a weight conscious ''balanced diet" and have put back 3kg. Today I have decided I need to stay on the high protein very low carb diet.

I really really want to watch this!! When will we in South Africa be able to see this? Weighed in at 4 years ago, dropped down to after a year on a doctor prescribed diet; then 2 years ago tried this method, recommended by my 23 year old son and his significant other who are still together, and dropped down to 30lbs over a 12 month span.

I am in year 2 of eating healthy, call it what you will but there is something to this "magic pill". No meds required any more, physicals are no longer a "what will they find this time" experience; I look forward to them.

My weight fluctuates between - depending on what I eat; when I do not eat like this, the weight comes like a bad dream.

I just buckle up an get back to it and the weight goes away. I sleep better and my dry eye issue is still here but less drastic than it was.

I use half the eye drops I used to these days. No magical cures, still an older man but I sure as heck feel better mentally and physically. I share the feelings stated by others about how watching this movie made me a bit emotional.

It was fun to watch and good to the feel the emotion; I think some of that emotion comes from thinking about why our system of agriculture has led us down this path - time to change.

I do not miss the processed food at all - kinda surprised that I now live without wheat products, dairy products and processed sugar.

Going to the Farmer's Market is now a favorite activity. Life changing! The idea behind the ketogenic diet is to change the way your body turns food into energy, by replacing the body's typical go-to energy source, carbohydrates — which get converted to blood glucose during digestion and metabolism — with fats.

By drastically lowering your carbohydrate intake, your body is pushed into a metabolic state known as ketosis, whereby ketone bodies or ketones are produced by the liver from fat, and used as fuel source to produce energy for the body.

In the film, neurologist David Perlmutter says "being in a mild state of ketosis is really the place to be".

But Professor Noakes says the ketogenic diet should only be used to treat specific medical conditions, and should always be done under the supervision of a health professional.

So, what about the documentary's depiction of the ketogenic diet as a treatment for diabetes, autism and even cancer? The diet was first developed as a treatment for epilepsy in the s, and has been shown to be effective in reducing the frequency and severity of seizures in patients with severe epilepsy.

As for whether it can be used in the treatment of autism spectrum disorder, Professor Noakes says the question remains "speculative".

When it comes to diabetes, Professor Noakes says a healthy diet can make "profound differences" to the condition, as it can with "a lot of illnesses".

But it doesn't have to be a ketogenic diet," she says. Perhaps more controversial is the film's depiction of a woman named Sara, who says her breast cancer tumour "started shrinking" after she began eating a strict ketogenic diet.

Sara claims cancer cells need sugar and refined carbohydrates to proliferate: "If you don't want them to reproduce, stop feeding them," she says.

But Darren Saunders, a cancer biologist and associate professor of medicine at the University of New South Wales, says the way the film presents Sara's case study is "kind of devious".

Dr Saunders says the notion that tumour cells rely on sugar is overly simplistic and not entirely correct. Dr Saunders says there is research currently underway into the use of ketogenic diets as an additional or adjuvant therapy in the treatment of cancer.

But he says the documentary doesn't make this distinction clear. Dr Saunders adds that Evans is "putting a lot of very questionable information out there".

Dr Bartone isn't the first high-profile member of the medical community calling for the documentary to be scrapped. Last year when the film was released, the AMA's then-president Michael Gannon tweeted that The Magic Pill should be nominated for an award for the film "least likely to contribute to public health".

Evans, who is no stranger to controversy , hit back at the AMA, suggesting the peak medical body had an interest in keeping Australians unhealthy.

Perhaps the bigger question to ask would be, 'Is the head of the AMA fearful of people in Australia becoming healthy? What would this mean to their industry?

The film also begins with a disclaimer that tells viewers, apart from food, "exercise, sleep, sunlight, meditation and other lifestyle factors" also play an important role in achieving better health.

The disclaimer is immediately followed by a quote attributed to ancient Greek physician Hippocrates that "nature is the healer of disease".

I am so glad I watched this. I had already started Healthy Keto following Dr. Eric Berg amoung others I am NOT a documentary type watcher Well it's different..

I feel that everyone should watch this and sincerely just make their own decision. I took a chance watching an Amazon documentary that had no reviews and I'm glad I did.

It provides scientific studies, test subjects and common sense about what we should be eating. It also touches on how food production actually impacts our carbon foot print.

Thank you, this documentary gives me hope. See all reviews. Back to top. Get to Know Us. Amazon Payment Products.

I'm sure vegetarians and vegans can find ways to achieve the same dietary input with tofu and so on. It is just harder. This isn't an antibiotic vegetarian or vegan diet, it is just accepting the diet we evolved with.

The latter are almost all prey for the first two. Humans are naturally omnivores. But today we can free range our meat and instead of Hunt them down and kill them with spear and clubs, we can process them pretty humanely.

Provided we demand free range, humanely killed meat, then we should have no moral qualms about eating meat. The animals we eat were always part of the food chain.
